Community Resources for the Homeless

Our community is dedicated to providing support for individuals experiencing homelessness. Local resources include emergency shelters, food assistance, healthcare services, mental health and substance use treatment, job training, and long-term housing programs. Outreach teams and nonprofit organizations work to connect individuals with the services they need to regain stability and independence. Whether you need immediate assistance or long-term support, help is available in Bloomington-Normal.

  • Home Sweet Home Ministries:

    • Provides Emergency Shelter Services at 303 E. Oakland Ave. offering shelter, food, case management, and other supportive services to individuals and families in need.  

    • Present for a screening. Screenings are available Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. If you are unable to come during those times, please call the front desk at 309-828-7356 for other arrangements. 

    • Have a valid photo State ID or Driver's License. 

    • Currently reside or most recently lived in our service area of McLean, Livingston, Logan, Dewitt, Woodford, Piatt, and Ford Counties. 

    • Be able to pass a background check (no recent battery or violent crimes, no sex offenders). 

    The Salvation Army - Safe Harbor Emergency Shelter

    • Offers breakfast and dinner 7 days a week and lunch Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Safe Harbor also offers case management to shelter residents and day service patrons. They are located at 208 N Oak St. and can be contacted at 309-829-9476.

    Project Oz

    • Connects runaways and youth who are experiencing a housing crisis, trying to prevent one, and people needing additional housing support. Call at 309-827-0377. Services are provided for people ages 17-23 years old. They are located at 1105 W. Front St. 

    Brightpoint - Central IL Regional Office

    • Provides a crisis nursery for children (0-6 years old) of people experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, mental health/substance abuse issues, home crisis, and for medical and other appointments. New participants must contact the 24-hour crisis line and speak with staff to schedule the initial intake at 309-834-5260. They are located at 403 S. State St. 

  • Apostolic Pentecostal Church

    • Provides free food for the Bloomington-Normal Community at a grocery style food bank. The Pantry has over 10 years of serving the community with over 260,000 meals served last year.

    • Open every Saturday with bible study at 9 am and food distribution from 10 am-12 pm.

    • Located at 2810 Tractor Lane in Bloomington, IL

    Abundant Life Church

    • Provides lunch and food pantry directly after their services.

    • Open Monday-Thursday lunch at 12 pm with the food pantry open from 12-1 pm. Open Sundays for lunch & a food pantry following service at 11 am. First come, first serve basis.

    • Located at 108 E. Market St. in Bloomington, IL

    Christ Church PCA - Redeeming Manna Food Pantry

    • Provides a food pantry once a month providing non-perishable and perishable foods from Midwest Food Bank along with other donors.

    • Intake Process: Anyone can request food on a one-time basis no questions asked. If someone would like to receive ongoing food support, there are general income guidelines based on household size to qualify. They also make exceptions to the financial guidelines for those who volunteer and for special circumstances on a case-by-case basis. This could include: a house fire, medical emergency, natural disaster or other extenuating circumstances.

    • Open once a month either on the first or second Thursday of each month. Exact dates and times can be found on their website.

    • Located at 1301 N. Linden St. at their youth house, just east of their main church building.

    Eastview Christian Church

    • Provides food, paper products, detergent, and personal hygiene items.

    • Rules: Must present a photo ID and a second item with your name and current address each time you visit the food pantry. Acceptable mail includes items such as a lease agreement, utility bill, car insurance bill, etc. and must be dated within 30 days. Only ONE resident of an address may use the pantry each month.

    • Open Tuesday 1-3 pm and 6-7:30 pm, and Wednesday 10 am-12 pm and 6-7:30 pm. Registration opens 30 mins. before the food pantry opens. Due to high demand, they might post a “Pantry is Full” sign.

    • Located at Eastview Normal Campus at 1500 North Airport Rd. in Normal, IL

    Home Sweet Home Ministries - Bread for Life Co-op

    • Provides a membership-based program where individuals can use their own capability to provide food for themselves and their families. The co-op serves low-income individuals and families struggling with chronic food security issues.  

    • Membership: Members of Bread for Life contribute to the co-op in one of two ways. One option is to work two hours per visit; the other is to work one hour per visit and pay $5. Members can visit the co-op twice per month, with larger families having more frequent access. We will continue to provide emergency food assistance when necessary.     • Open Monday 3-5 pm, Wednesday 2-4 pm, Thursday 6-8 pm and Friday 2-4 pm.

    • Located at 305 E. Oakland Avenue in Bloomington, IL

    Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen

    • Provides a soup kitchen and food pantry twice a week. Food bags are distributed outside of the Parish Hall, located in the North parking lot of the parish.

    • Open Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 am-12:30 pm.

    • Located at 527 W. Jackson St. in Bloomington, IL

    Ministry & More, Inc.

    • Provides one bag of food staples plus household products, frozen meat, bread and fresh produce as available to each household. ID is required for first time visitors, and something that verifies the visitor’s address. No proof of income is required.

    • Open from 10 am-12 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday by appointment, they can be reached at 309-823-9804.

    • Located at 1107 W. Empire St. in Bloomington, IL

    Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church

    • Provides a weekly food pantry with non-perishable items.

    • Open every Wednesday from 4:30-6 pm.

    • Located at 801 W. Market St. in Bloomington, IL.

    The Salvation Army Food Pantry

    • Provides a food pantry offering perishable and non-perishable items for people. People can access the food pantry once a month per household and anyone in McLean County can come to the pantry.

    • Requirements: At every visit, you must have a government-issued photo i.d. and a current (last 30-60 days) piece of mail (utility bill, lease, etc.) showing residency in McLean County.

    • Open every Monday and Wednesday from 9 am - 2:30 pm (excluding holidays).

    • Located at 611 W. Washington St. in Bloomington, IL in their Family Services Building *entrance is on the north side of the building.

    School Street Food Pantry

    • Provides a food pantry serving college students in the Bloomington-Normal area. Items include non-perishables, a variety of dairy items, frozen foods, fresh produce, and breads. They also have a variety of personal care items and cleaning supplies when available.

    • Only students who are currently enrolled in a college or trade school in the Bloomington-Normal area and experiencing food insecurity are eligible to use the School Street Pantry.

    • Open every Friday from 4-6 pm August-May and every Thursday from 4-6 pm June-July.

    • Located at 211 North School St. in Normal, IL

    St. Vincent DePaul Society

    • Provides a food pantry with fresh produce, dairy products, meat, bread and baked goods, and non-perishable items. Volunteers work to collect donated from a variety of suppliers including food banks, farmers, grocery stores, and individuals. All food is then pre-packaged into family size units.

    • Eligibility is based on government assistance food guidelines and family size. Food pantry visits are limited to residents of Bloomington, Normal, McLean County and counties adjacent to McLean County.

    • Open every Monday from 9 am-12 pm and 1-4 pm and on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month from 9-11 am.

    • Located at 705 N. Roosevelt Avenue in Bloomington.

    Union Missionary Baptist Church

    • Provides a food pantry by appointment-only with donations coming from church members, the Midwest Food Bank, and a private foundation.

    • Open weekdays by appointment-only. Appointments can be made by calling the church at 309-828-1162.

    • Located at 509 W. Jackson St. in Bloomington

    Wesley United Methodist Church

    • Provides a paper distribution once a month for families in the community. Items distributed include diapers, wipes, paper towels, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, etc. there are no edible items distributed.

    • Open on the third Saturday of each month from 9-11:30 am or open for as long as supplies last.

    • Located at 413 E. Washington St. in Bloomington, IL

  • McLean County Center for Human Services

    • Provides screening and intakes for everyone who calls or comes in to assess their needs in order to match them to the right services and right provider. Outpatient counseling services for adults, youth, and families as deemed appropriate through the intake and assessment process. Youth outreach services offers counseling and case management to school-aged youth in McLean County who struggle with behavioral problems.

    • Open Monday-Thursday from 8 am-5 pm and Friday from 8 am-3 pm.

    Behavioral Health Urgent Care

    • Provides free of charge care for individuals 18 years old and older experiencing a behavioral health crisis. This care center offers an alternative to emergency departments for individuals who are not in need of medication or medical support.

    • Open Monday-Friday from 9 am-1 am, Saturday from 5 pm-1 am, and Sunday from 9 am-1 am.

    • Located at 520 N. Center St. in Bloomington, IL on the south side of the building.

    Center for Youth and Family Solutions

    • Provides a program focused on high-quality affordable counseling services, with a strengths-based, family-centered, and trauma-informed approach. No one will be denied services due to an inability to pay. A sliding fee scale is available based on household size and income.

    INtegRIty Counseling

    • Provides a community-based, non-profit counseling agency to clients. They use a “pay as you can” or sliding scale to have clients contribute what they are able to afford for counseling. They have qualified professionals and counseling interns who donate their time to see clients.

  • Center for Prevention of Abuse

    • Provides emergency safe shelter, medical advocacy, court advocates who assist in obtaining orders of protection, safety planning, therapy/counseling, support groups, and access to NextStep housing for individuals who are victim of abuse.

    • Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and all victim services are free and confidential. Call the crisis hotline for emergent services at 1-800-559-7233 or call the Center at 309-691-0551 for non-crisis services.
